Moxsie Men's Forecast for 2010

Jan 30, 2010

Men's Fashion Week wrapped up a couple of weeks ago, and in the meantime we've finally gotten a chance to catch up on the top men's style bloggers. (Steady blog reading takes work, people!) With our powers combined, we present: Moxsie's Men's Forecast for 2010! (You can always revisit our take on Women's style for 2010 here.)

WORKING HARD, HARDLY WORKINGWhile it's key that you have the basics - well-fitted shirt, slacks, and jacket - we're going to see men's style shift more toward looser, business casual. Leisure moves in on otherwise formal territory with basic colors but more ready-to-wear pieces.

WELL EQUIPPED | Accessories are often overlooked when it comes to men's style editorial, but maybe that's because they make the mistake of thinking you already have the key essentials. Another misconception is that in order to be a well-dressed man, you have to focus on the clothes. Not true. It's just as much about what fills your pockets and how you carry your goods as it is about how your threads hang on your body.

POLISHED STREET  | There are many variations to the concept of polished street style, but what it comes down to is the details in your wares. A polished, street style-savvy man is not averse to surprise embellishments, but he is mindful that they be subtle deviations from the norm.

Top 10 Worst Fashion Trends of the Decade

Jan 6, 2010

The Aughts were fantastic, but no decade goes by without a few fashion missteps. Below, our Moxsie version of the Top 10 Worst Fashion Trends.

10. Tracksuits – Tracksuits are comfortable daytime excuses for pajamas, but that’s if you’re going to and from the gym, the grocery store, or errands that require you to do more driving than walking. Otherwise, let us not dismiss the “track” in “tracksuits.” Tracksuits are for sports.

9. Words Across Your Bum – Obviously we love statement pieces, but there are classier ways to make your most prized personality traits known to the world.

8. Dressing Little Girls Like Overdone Pop Stars – Remember when cute was appreciated for being cute? Let little girls be little girls!

Dimepiece Tiger Mesh Jodhpurs7. Drop-Crotch Pants – Just to be clear, we love harem pants. These Dimepiece jodhpurs are perfect - funky yet flattering. Moxsie simply has to draw the line when function is traded for nonsensible form, say, when the crotch falls anywhere below mid-thigh. Also, saying “drop-crotch” in public feels slightly awkward, no?

6. Muffin Top – We're not against skinny jeans, we're just against wearing clothes that don't fit.

5. Dark Bras with Sheer Tops – Contrasting colors are cool, but the combination of a black bra with a nude mesh top is just...too. Too failed throwback to the 80s, too Carrie a la Sex and the City, and too...ugly.

4. Low-Rise Jeans
– At least wear a longer top.

3. Mini Skirts with Winter Uggs – It must be a sign of an inner conundrum when a person’s lower hemisphere is in climate disagreement with itself.

2. Trucker Hats – It’s difficult to say what the real issue here is: Is it the mesh? Is it the spongey front? Is it the ironic graphic? We love hats, we just don’t love trucker hats.

1. Biker Tattoo-Emblazoned Shirts with Rhinestones – Everyone loves a little kitsch to spice up an outfit. Yet there are reasons why accent colors are considered accent colors. Unfortunately the Jon Gosselin School of Style preaches that more is more, when really, more just hurts our eyes.

Thanks for the idea, Heavy! Their original list had us roaring and nodding our heads.

Peasants and Travelers Olive ToteRight after we spotted Peasants and Travelers at Chillin Productions, The New York Times picked up on Jee Kim's amazing bags. In "Men with Baggage, of the Stylish Sort," The Perfectionist columnist Guy Trebay commented on P&T's "mysterious high-tech fabric." Check out the Olive Tote Trebay tried out in Moxsie's handbags.

Help Fur Face Boy's HELP Fund

Dec 8, 2009

Fur Face Boy Blockman TeeLast year, a college-bound girl was headed to the library to return some books. She was attacked. Beaten and raped, she ended up in the hospital, where every day her friends and family hope she can eventually get up and leave.

The young woman has been braindead since that day. That day, her mother said to the media in Vietnamese, "My soul is broken."

Moxsie was founded on furthering designers' expression, particularly curating designers who have a strong sense of social responsibility and those who are agents of change in their worlds. We are fully in support of Fur Face Boy designer Ha's next move:

I decided to donate 50% of all my sales for the month + I will match the total dollar for dollar from my own personal funds at the end of the month.

'Tis the season of giving, and this month we encourage you to look through Fur Face Boy's collection or help the family in any way you can. It's all about hope.

Q&A with FUR FACE BOY

Sep 16, 2009

Starting a brand can be a stinging ordeal, and it's easy to forget that successful designers had to start somewhere.

We're sat down with Fur Face Boy's owner/creator/designer, Hai Mai, who gives the phrase "one-man-show" a whole new definition. Mai started as a graphic designer, but now develops and promotes his line of t-shirts and accessories under his label. The quippy designer gives us the lowdown on douchebag clothes and how FUR FACE BOY has literally taken over his life.
