Marine Layer takes great pride in producing their shirts in California. This minimizes their environmental footprint and supports 3 American factories that have been in business for over 25 years.

Their custom fabric is a blend of two yarns, Pima Cotton and MicroModal, produced by Lenzig AG. Modal is a bio-based fabric that comes from recycled Beech Wood. They specifically chose Lenzig fibers because of their sustainable, closed-loop manufacturing process. Only Wood pulp from local forests is used and over 95% of the production materials are recycled and reused.

How Marine Layer goes to great lengths to make the perfect shirt: :
Step 1: Their fabric is custom knit and washed for the first time at a mill in Los Angeles. This gives them complete control over the weaving process so that every run of fabric is consistent in quality. Most companies do not do this and it is one of the reasons why you might buy two shirts in the same size and they end up shrinking by different amounts.
Step 2: The fabric is shipped to their cut & sew facility just outside of San Francisco where it is dyed and put through a second shrink-wash.
Step 3: They then knit a few test garments and measure their specs.
Step 4: The test garments are washed in hot water and dried until they stop shrinking. This usually takes 1 or 2 wash and dry cycles.
Step 5: They then calculate the exact amount of shrinkage that has occurred and build that back into the pattern.
Step 6: The fabric is cut and sewn into shirts that are larger than their target specifications by the amount of remaining shrinkage.
Step 7: The shirts are then screen-printed or embroidered at another facility in the bay area.
Step 8: All of the shirts are then put through the same wash and dry cycles as the test garments. So the finished product that gets to you is actually shrunk to within 2% of its final size.
