Sean William Salim was born in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1983, but grew up in Singapore and the United States. Salim attended school for animation, film, marketing and fine arts, before opting for fashion design at Parsons, New York, which he confesses, “was all crap. Most of what I know, I learned from internships and talking to a lot of people.” Clearly, there was truth to the unashamedly blunt insight: Salim's senior show ignited media attention and buyers were entranced by his unique, almost child-like proportions and whimsical touches. S2VS adapts liberally from that groundwork and makes it the brand’s signature look.

The emergence of S2VS was borne of dissatisfaction with the status quo. Appalled by the tediousness of menswear, its frumpy fits, casualness and exacting price-points, Salim found a counter-point for his contemporary street wear brand in May 2007. The brand name was intended to “sound modern, catchy, but at the same time anonymous gibberish.” His collections juxtaposes an obsession with sci-fi as well as fashion traditions of the past.
